Donate your car in Buffalo-Niagara by December 31 and, in most cases, you can deduct the vehicle’s sale price on your 2024 federal tax return. Wheels for Hope partners with Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3), to handle the towing, sale, and IRS paperwork for you. If your vehicle sells for over $500, Heritage for the Blind will mail you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale, showing the exact gross proceeds you may generally deduct when you itemize on Schedule A. If it sells for $500 or less, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment so you can deduct up to $500 or the fair market value, whichever is lower.

Vehicle is sold and IRS paperwork is generated
Within weeks of saleHeritage for the Blind arranges the sale of your vehicle. Once it sells, they determine the gross sale proceeds. If the sale price is over $500, they prepare IRS Form 1098-C. If it’s $500 or less, they issue a written acknowledgment for your records.
Receive tax documents by mail and file your return
Within 30 days of saleWithin 30 days after the sale, Heritage for the Blind mails your Form 1098-C (over $500 donations) or written acknowledgment (at or under $500). You then use that document when itemizing deductions on Schedule A. Consult your tax professional for how it applies to your specific situation.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Deduction equals actual sale price
For most cars donated through Wheels for Hope, IRS rules say your deduction is generally the vehicle’s gross sale price—not Kelley Blue Book or your estimate. Heritage for the Blind sells the car and reports that sale amount on your tax paperwork.
How IRS Form 1098-C works
If your donated car sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind mails you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. This form lists the vehicle details and the gross proceeds, which is usually the maximum amount you can deduct when itemizing.
Donations of $500 or less
If your vehicle sells for $500 or less, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment instead of Form 1098-C. In that case, you may generally deduct up to $500 or the vehicle’s fair market value, whichever is lower, when you itemize deductions.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To benefit from a car donation tax deduction, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. If you take the standard deduction, you won’t claim an additional tax break specifically for your Buffalo car donation.
Dec 31 controls which tax year
Your deduction applies to the year in which you donate the car—not when it sells. As long as the charity accepts your vehicle by December 31, you generally claim the deduction on that year’s return. Keep your pickup confirmation as proof of the donation date.
